Stihl Fuel Recommendations

Stihl is a maker of small hand held equipment such as chainsaws, string trimmers, blowers, etc. In the Frequently Asked Questions section of the Stihl website there is a question on the use of ethanol blended fuel.

Will a 10% (E10) blend of ethanol hurt my chain saw, trimmer, or blower?

All STIHL gasoline powered engines are OK for use with up to a 10% (E10) blend of ethanol in gasoline.

  1. This is BS...

I have a MS290 approx 2 1/2 years old and just paid $160 to have a new carburetor put on becasue the ethanol in the gas damaged the check valves.

  2. I have a 4 year old BG65 hand held blower, a 2 year old BP380 backpack blower, and a 3 year old FS110R string trimmer and have had no problems whatsoever. The hand held blower may have seen some ethanol free gasoline during it's first year but for the last 3 years nothing but E10 in all of them.

I also have 2 Husqvarna 323L and 1 326L string trimmers. The 326L did quit operating the way it should after I started using ethanol but I think it was probably me running over it with the truck that caused the problem.

So I don't know. Maybe it's just the luck of the draw. But the one thing I can tell you for sure is that it doesn't matter what is in the tank when 6,000 pounds rolls over them.
